The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
