A trader made nearly half a million dollars from wagers on the downfall of Nicolás Maduro shortly prior to it was made public, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of American actions.

Sudden Shift in Forecasts

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a blockchain-based service, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the month's conclusion increased in the time leading up to President Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that the president had been apprehended.

A single trader, which joined the platform last month and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $436,000 from a modest bet of over $32,000.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before News Break

Market statistics shows that users put the odds of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

However the market's assessment had increased to over 10% by late Friday night and surged in the early hours of January 3rd, indicating a sharp shift in betting activity just before the public announcement was made.

"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a bet based on confidential knowledge," commented a financial reform advocate.

Several of other traders also profited large payouts from bets on the same outcome.

Legal Questions Grows

Politicians are beginning to pay attention.

A new rule put forward on Monday seeks to ban public officials from making trades on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a wager.

Market Background

Event-driven betting sites have grown significantly in the past few years, with participants able to predict everything from sports to political events.

This sector faced scrutiny under the previous administration. However it has found a more favorable environment during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the traditional financial markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting arena.

An official representative for a competing service said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
